Gwangmyeong Madang Play Festival X Korea Madang Play Festival

The Gwangmyeong Madang Play Festival is a performing arts festival where the satire, humor, excitement, and high spirits of traditional madang play, Korea's open-air courtyard theater, can be enjoyed with today's sensibility. First staged in 2024, it has grown with the interest and love of Gwangmyeong citizens and marks its third year this year. Polished works and accomplished performing groups join to present a colorful lineup ranging from madang play to fusion gugak, circus, and street performance, and citizen participation programs are on offer so that anyone of any age can join in. The festival's distinguishing feature is the chance to experience up close the charm unique to madang play, which tears down the boundary between stage and seats as performers and audience breathe together. Turning the area around Gwangmyeong Citizens' Sports Complex into one open performance ground, it is establishing itself as Gwangmyeong's flagship performing arts festival where citizens and artists laugh, play, and connect together.
