The Jinju Namgang Lantern Festival originated from the lanterns floated on the Namgang River during the Battle of Jinjuseong in the Imjin War — lit to stop the Japanese forces from crossing the river and to send word of safety to families. Once designated a representative festival of Korea by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and selected for five consecutive years as a Korea global-nurturing festival, it is a premium festival reaching audiences overseas.
